Why Hozho

What is the origin of the name Hozho?

Hozho Collective

As I was developing my ideas around Living System Design and the Contributionism movement, it needed to manifest as a project.

I remember sitting with my maternal grandmother, having a conversation about our family and she told me she was 1/16 Lakota Sioux. As a young woman growing up on a farm in eastern Montana she was very connected to the land. This conversation planted an awareness in me around my indigenous heritage. For me there is something about indigenous languages which communicate states of being above and beyond a simple word.

When I started thinking about the projects I wanted to put my creative energy toward, it went beyond what we were doing, it was about how people would feel and interact with one another. What would it feel like if we lived in harmony with each other and the planet. It didn’t take long for a search to reveal the answer! Here is what I found…

In Navajo culture, “Hózhó” (pronounced “Hoh-zho”) signifies a state of beauty, harmony, balance, and well-being, encompassing a way of life that strives for order and a deep connection with the natural world.

Meaning:
Hózhó translates to “walking in beauty” or “living in a way that is good, healthy, and peaceful,” emphasizing balance and harmony in all aspects of life.

Core Concepts:
  • Beauty: Hózhó extends beyond physical appearance, encompassing health, goodness, and harmonious relationships with people, the natural world, and spiritual beings.
  • Harmony: It emphasizes living in balance with oneself, others, and the environment.
  • Well-being: Hózhó promotes a state of wholeness and interconnectedness, where all things are seen as part of a larger, meaningful whole.
  • Order: It suggests living in a way that is orderly and in accordance with natural laws and principles.
Significance:
Hózhó is considered a fundamental principle in Navajo culture, guiding their beliefs, practices, and way of life.

Related Phrases
  • “Hózhó Naasha” means “walking in beauty”
  • “Hózhó Nahasdlii” means “all is beautiful again”

Finding The Land

You need people and a place for new ideas to take root and begin to grow.

For 25 years I’ve been going to a special place about 45 minutes from the idyllic Napa Valley in Northern California.

The initial attraction was an amazing hot spring, Harbin. Located in an isolated canyon, its healing waters provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco Bay Area. Eventually purchasing a vacation cabin I started spending time in the area on a regular basis…I fell in love with Lake County.

In 2015 the hot spring and general area were devastated by one of the first California mega fires. While I lost my cabin, I didn’t lose my love for the area.

Fast forward to 2023, the hot spring has been rebuilt, I have a new cabin and I’m feeling drawn to the regenerative farming movement. From time to time I would look online for land, holding the intention for the perfect parcel.

In July of 2023 I was scheduled to go to my cabin for a few days and on a whim I looked for land for sale. To my delight there was a 20 acre parcel for sale…it was flat, on a seasonal creek and sat on one of the biggest aquifers in Lake County. There were some small buildings, a well operated with off the grid solar and an old tractor with a variety of attachments. And it was located on the road to the hot spring.

It was perfect!

Other Updates

I scheduled a visit, meet the owner and got to see and feel the land. Going to sit in the waters of the hot spring I imagined the possibilities. That night at the cabin , in my sleep, all my fears came to the surface! The contrast between the head and the heart. Sitting in the tension, I listened to my heart. After putting together an offer, the owner accepted. From the day I first saw the property to the day I owned it was 2 weeks. It was meant to be!
